The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous “yes.”

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else—the small stuff. “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

“Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first—the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.”

Reliving the glory days

Went up to NorCal this weekend to visit and to drive my brother’s car down since SoCal is not a public transportation-friendly place. As usual, I had an absolute blast! Makes me miss college and all my friends up there.

Berkeley: I MISS BERKELEY FOOD. No matter how good the Asian food is down here in Alhambra, there’s no place like Gregoire’s, Brazil Cafe, Ici’s, Cheeseboard, and let’s not forget my favorite place, Porno’s. Reminded me of the good old college days :)

SF: Surprise, surprise we did not go to Nick’s Tacos this time. I miss those delicious tacos and cheap tequila shots. My friends wanted to go to Eastside West the first night. (Note: last time I went there to celebrate my brother’s birthday, the night did not end well..) As usual, the night turned into a wild adventure of its own.. literally an adventure around SF.

Quote of the night:

T: “This wine is from Hungries.”

Rest of us: “Lol, wait.. what?”

T: “Oh haha, sorry.. I meant Hungaria”

The next day the weather was too beautiful to not be outside. Perfect for a picnic in the park and a stroll around Fisherman’s Wharf with the girls. We got dinner early at a delicious Thai restaurant (T2J) that had a crab special menu that was nomz! Then I proceeded to food coma with T and J on the bed until it was time to get ready for night numero dos - Upsilons reunion @ Ruby Skye with Alesso! It was good seeing the class again (missing a few) - 3 years since we crossed yeah!

Of course, all our usual favorite party people (non-Upsilons) also came out with us and enjoyed the untz untz music and lights. Woke up the next day with bruises, broken toenails, and a hangover = all the elements of a good night.

Overall, my time in Norcal was amazing! It always makes me sad to leave, especially this time, knowing it was probably the last time I would visit before my move to New York in June. I used to be sad and even a little scared leaving my friends and family, but lately, my mind is more at peace with my decision. I know if I stayed in SF, I will probably be hanging out with the same people and doing the same things. It’s not a bad thing, but I think I am ready to live somewhere new, meet new people, explore new things, maybe even mature a little =P, and New York is an exciting place to do all of that. Sure, it will be a little scary moving to the big city while knowing only a handful of people, but hey, life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

The coincidence is I was going to post this same exact video.

So clutch. Such a leader. So much respect from true Laker fans.

Would have been nice to see Fisher end his career in purple and gold :(
